Ron Abuelo 7
Color: Amber +2
ABV: 40%
Aroma Neat:
Light Tar/Molasses, French Vanilla, Fresh Bananas, Fatty Sweetness (buttery, bourbony), Brown Sugar, Butterscotch, Toasted Oak, Clean Charred Wood (no ash), Mint (slightly), Mango Ice Cream, Papaya, Apples with Cinnamon (slightly).
Certain components of maturation happen quite quickly in tropical climates. It may only be seven years old, but it doesn't seem immature at all. In fact, it's very well rounded. There seem to be a lot of bourbon characteristics in this one, though it gets much fruitier with time in the glass.
Aroma Water:
Toasty Vanilla/Marshmallow, Light Brown Sugar/Syrupy Wood Sugars, Mango Ice Cream, Cinnamon, Sweet Marzipan, Golden Delicious Apples, Fatty Sweetness, Crisp Oak, Butterscotch (quite buttery), Berry Cream Savers.
Lighter and crisper than neat, but also creamier... Not sure how that's possible. Overall similar profile to neat, but molasses and oak have retreated somewhat.
Taste Neat:
Syrupy Brown Sugar, Molasses/Marmite, Maple Syrup/Wood Sugars, Charred Oak, Dark Crystallized Honey, Cinnamon, Burnt Marzipan (slightly).
Very brown sugar-oriented and syrupy. Surprisingly thick mouthfeel and heavy flavor, given the age and ABV.
Taste Water:
Molasses, Tannic Oak, Heavy Barrel Char, Coffee/Cola, Syrupy Brown Sugar, Butterscotch, Burnt Cinnamon.
Not too different from neat, with the exception of a coffee/cola type of character.
Finish:
Heavy Barrel Char (no ash), Dark Brown Sugar, Molasses, Butterscotch (tail end).
Woody and dark. Nicely drying and of medium duration.
Conclusion:
Balanced nose which changes with water, but remains enjoyable.
Bigger than expected palate with is reasonably resilient to water.
Clean char makes for a rewardingly dry finish.
Rating: 83/100
A surprisingly tasty and flavorful rum. It's price point of 20-25 USD makes it a fantastic deal as well. It would be a great, low risk way to introduce yourself to rum!
